Why in the world do schools, colleges and universities require their graduating students to wear formal graduation regalia? The reason lies in the spirit of the graduation ceremony itself.

The Significance of the Rite

The graduation ceremony, regardless of academic level, is a way to honor the graduating students’ achievements. It is a way to recognize the hardships they endured, the rigors that they went through and the obstacles that they overcame. The formalities of the event presuppose that each individual has gained throughout his or her stay in the educational institution a significant level of intellectual prowess, moral integrity and social maturity. Hence, the graduation rite is a joyful yet solemn occasion, and is appropriately formal.

The History of the Rite

In order to understand why the graduation outfit is so specific, however, one must peak into the long history and tradition that underlies today’s academic institutions. You see, the college graduation gown, cap and stole are somewhat of a throwback to the medieval ages, when the first universities began to emerge. These earliest of formal educational institutions were administered to by clerics, and it requires no stretch of the imagination to see that modern graduation dress bears a striking resemblance to the monkish garb of centuries past. Thus, the graduation outfit is a way of recognizing the centuries-long traditions and history that make schools and colleges what they are today.

Finding an Outfit at the Right Price

Graduation clothes should look clean and sharp. However, this doesn’t mean that one shouldn’t seriously think about ways to cut back on unnecessary expenses. If this idea appeals to you, then here are some tips to help you get started finding a set of academic robes and hoods:

-	Begin your search well in advance of the big day. Most students will wait until last minute before they even think about putting their outfit together. If you want to avoid the throngs of graduates competing for limited supplies of graduation outfit pieces, then start looking a couple of months early. You’ll also be able to save money, because stores will take advantage of the peak season by raising the prices of their goods.
-	Make sure you’re following college guidelines. You don’t want to buy something that you won’t be able to use, come graduation day.
-	Be creative while staying within the prescribed boundaries. If you know what you must and must not wear, then you can also figure out what you can (but need not) wear. Try to find ways to work around your college’s graduation dress code so that you can come up with an outfit that is formal, but still expresses your personality and tastes.
-	If you can, REUSE. There are a lot of people in your neighbourhood who have just recently graduated from your college, and you might just know a couple of them.

Hood was first a functional garment, worn out to shield the head from the elements. It has urban to an often bright and pretty garment worn only on particular occasion. It is also worn by clergy and lay readers of the faculty regalia in choir dress, over the surplice and it is common in cathedrals, churches, and chapels for the choirmaster or members of the choir to wear an academic hood to which they are entitled during services.
Hoods include two basic patterns: full shape or simple shape. The traditional full-shape hood consists of a cape, as is used at Cambridge. At Oxford, the bachelors’ and masters’ hoods use simple hoods that have lost their cape and retain only the cowl and liripipe. A few universities only have a cape and cowl and no liripipe; these are referred to as the Aberdeen shape. A choice of other universities have different shapes and patterns of hoods, in some cases related to the pattern current at the ancient universities at the time when they were found as a stoles for graduation.
The color and lining of hoods in academic dress represent the rank and faculty of the wearer. In many Commonwealth universities bachelors wear hoods edged or lined with white rabbit fur, while masters wear hoods lined with colored silk. Doctors’ hoods are normally made of ruby cloth and lined with colored silk. Faculty colors were introduced by the University of London and many universities followed as graduation robes.
The hood is always worn with a gown though there are some exceptions such as Oxford doctors who do not wear a hood with their festal robes though this regulation is often ignored at graduation ceremonies at other universities when Oxford doctors are sitting in the faculty regalia.
The neckband of the hood usually has a loop of new function is to hook onto the button of a cassock. Since many do not wear cassocks for graduation, the loop is sometimes hooked onto a shirt button instead. Though, seeing as the hood is rather heavy this has a leaning to pull the lightweight shirt upwards. The right way to wear the hood is to allow the neckband to clearly hook itself onto the collar under the tie which secures the hood in place. At times, the hood is worn too forward and down being hooked onto the jacket button or pinned which causes the hood to sit badly and more be likely slip down the shoulders like a shawl as stole for graduation.

Keeping records for each school year is important for different reasons. They’ll help you to monitor your child’s progress, keep track of lesson plans and become part of a portfolio for college entry. Record keeping will help you to meet short and long-term goals for your school year. They will help in planning your lessons and help keep you on track during the school year.

Write a list of all the books and materials you use in school and keep with your records. You might want to include a list of books and materials you find interesting to research for later use in school.

Lesson plan books come in many styles. The most popular have the weekdays listed across the top and places along the sides for the subjects. You can easily create your own lesson plan book using a ruler and paper then inserting it in a three ring binder. Your local teacher supply store should also carry simple lesson planning books. This type of record keeping helps to plan out your curriculum on a weekly basis.

A daily logbook is like keeping a diary or journal for school days. It is used for writing ideas or activities that your children participated in each day. You can buy a logbook for homeschoolers or just use notebook paper and place in a binder. Write brief descriptions of the school day events and also include the date. If a school day doesn’t go as planned, then a daily log will help you to keep track of exactly what was accomplished that day. Have your children keep their own daily log if they are old enough to write down the day’s projects and activities. This will help them to retain what they learned and will help them with their writing skills.

Some states require a list of the books, curriculum and materials used by each child, every school year. Simply record each item used in that week in either your weekly lesson plan book or on the back of your daily logbook. Include the book title, author or publisher and you may want to give a brief description of how the book was used.

A home school portfolio may be required by your state but even if it’s not, it is useful when applying for colleges and for an annual evaluation of your child’s progress. The portfolio can include anything related to your child’s education. This may include lesson plans, logbooks, worksheets, test results, writing assignments and book reports. Field trips taken, special events, experiments, scrapbooks of projects and artwork should also be a part of the portfolio. Although most homeschoolers do not keep grades, you may find them beneficial. After grading your children’s papers, record their score in a grade book, available at a teacher supply store. Every six weeks, use a handheld grader, such as E-Z Grader to determine the average grade of each subject. By knowing their grades, you can determine any weakness your children may have in a particular subject and can now help them to improve their grade average.

Most children like receiving certificates for good grades or just a good job done well. They are available for almost every situation such as preschool, reading, science, honor roll and more. Certificates help build your child’s self-esteem by giving them a feeling of accomplishment and pride in their work. It also shows them the progress they’ve made in the school year.

Keep all your records in one binder for easy access, using tabs to separate by topic, subject or by child. Be sure to check with your states regulations for record keeping before you home school to make sure you follow their requirements.

It isn't simple to find a scholarship these days. Scholarships are not the same as a student loan in that the cash is a grant, so it does not need to be paid back

Searching for help to finance a university education can be difficult and can certainly take time. Scholarships are not the same as a regular student loan because the money is a grant, and consequently, repayment is not necessary. While searching ways of funding your degree, remember that cash is available in unusual spots, such as lefthander grants.

We suggest you inspect our brilliant website for scholarship essay introduction tips…

Funding for Lefties: – A southpaw grant may look out of the ordinary, but do consider these facts: Julius Caesar was a southpaw, so is the president of the USA, Barack Obama. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Ringo Starr also Charlie Chaplin were also southpaws. An estimated eleven percent of the population are lefties. Often considered much more artistic and more intelligent, southpaws have often been the victims of discrimination. Today, lefties are no longer stigmatized or thought of as odd, as a matter of fact they may even be associated with the many great people named above.

If you are lefthanded and exploring grants for left handed scholars, numerous scholarships for left handed students exist which you could acquire. The Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Scholarship for anything up to a thousand dollars is available at Juniata College in Huntington, PA. For students of Juniata College and launched in the late seventies, this school fund has assisted over forty southpaws through school. Some scholarships may have prerequisites or limitations. Sometimes particular grades may be required or particular monetary guidelines have to be met. Do apply for as many college scholarships as possible to give you a better probabilty of supporting your college education with a minimal level of debt. Do consider local organisations, societies and even groups affiliated with your hobbies. Grants for southpaw students aren’t the only example; financial help is likewise available if you are a child of a ex-serviceman or suffer from a disability, to offer some illustrations. Exploring school bursaries may be time-consuming, but the rewards will always be valuable. The debt generated by a university degree may be decreased via these scholarships utilised alongside normal borrowing. Leave no stone unturned in researching every scholarship. Left-handed funding is not the only choice – write a list of every alternative you can envisage and utilize your creativity. Go for everything you think you are suitable for, keeping any debt to a minimum, and you will probably look forward to improved prospects when you eventually graduate.

Searching for alternative methods like university scholarships to finance a higher education is frequently difficult and time-consuming. School scholarships are unlike a normal student loan in that these are a grant for a college education, so it does not have to be paid back...

We strongly recommend you check out our great resource for equestrian scholarship a smooth ride through college info…

When looking for means to finance your further instruction, be conscious that funds are available at truly unusual places, such as financing specially for left-handed students.

Scholarships for Lefties: — It may appear crazy to offer a bursary dependent on being left-handed, however it’s worth considering this: Benjamin Franklin was a southpaw, as is President Barack Obama. Raphael, Da Vinci, Bob Dylan and were also left-handed. Close to 11% of the world’s population are left handed. Alas in the past southpaws have gone through discrimination, now they are considered to be more intelligent and more artistic. Today, lefties are no longer discriminated against or thought of as odd, as a matter of fact they are sometimes associated with the exceptional individuals referred to above.

Beckley Scholarship for up to $1,000 is currently available at Juniata College in Huntington, PA. For scholars of Juniata College and set up in the late 1970’s, this scholarship has aided over 40 students through university. Whilst you are searching for scholarships, do be mindful that some grants have prerequisites or limitations. Sometimes particular grades may be required or particular monetary guidelines must be met. Do go for for as many scholarships as achievable to give you a greater probabilty of graduating with a minimal amount of debt. Clubs, hobby related groups and community organisations may provide scholarships. Scholarships for southpaw scholars are just one case; funds are even obtainable if you are a child of a ex-serviceman or are disabled, for example.

You will probably have to invest some time exploring university grants, of course the advantages can be sizable. The debt generated by a university degree may be decreased through these scholarships used in conjunction a student loan. Ensure you research each opportunity. Do remember the different options besides lefthanded bursaries — list all the options you can think of and be sure to utilize your imagination.

In the last 30 years or so, a quiet revolution has begun, and it’s changing the way people look at the compulsory nature of school forever. What started out in the 60’s as a radical choice made mostly by parents concerned about the lack of religious teaching in public schools has evolved into something spectacular…something so perfect that it seems intimidating. And it’s available to any family willing to make the change.

So often, when people find out that my kids do not go to school, I get responses like ” Oh, I could NEVER do that. I’m not smart enough.” or “I don’t think I could stand being with my kids all day every day.” and “You must be really disciplined.” Truth is, I don’t have a college degree, but I am absolutely ’smart enough’ to be a home schooling parent, and I have every right to do so. I don’t necessarily consider myself a disciplined person, either, and that is just one of the multitude or reasons why home schooling is a perfect match for our family.

There are many reasons why a family might choose home schooling over public or private school. A child may have an illness or disability for which public school cannot provide proper care. Of course, public schools try hard to be politically correct, and will do what they can to assist any children with difficulties, but it’s hard enough for one adult teacher to watch over and effectively control a class of 25 ‘normally functioning’ students, much less having one or two kids thrown in who have very special medical and physical needs.

I can think of no environment more nurturing, more secure and loving, especially for a physically ill or disabled child, than the comfort and familiarity of their own home and attentive parents. After all, who understands a child’s needs better than an attentive parent?

Home schooling is perfect for Moms like me who work from home. It gives flexibility and plenty of time to spend with the amazing individual minds that society calls my children.

Perhaps the child has been labeled ADHD and put on medication. These narcotics subdue the active child, effectively enabling him to sit still longer and to ‘pay attention’ to what the teacher deems important…a necessary requirement in school. Home schooling, however, imposes no such limitations. If your child needs to bounce, to talk, to run or even to roll, these things can be allowed and even encouraged in a home schooling environment.

The negative and long lasting effects of the commonly prescribed drugs are now coming to light. Concerned parents are becoming more skeptical of physicians quick fix diagnoses and the schools insistence that such things are required to keep the classroom ‘functioning’….especially when it involves their own children.

Perhaps the child just doesn’t excel in school, has discipline problems or just plain ‘hates’ it. Why make them do something they hate every day? Why not give them the joy that comes along with being free to learn on their own time and focus on what interests them?

No matter what the reason a home schooling parent gives for taking their child out of school, one thing is certain. Home schooling is growing in popularity to the point where almost everyone knows someone who is or was home schooled. It may be a quiet revolution, but it’s voice is growing louder year by year.
