Walking Trails in the Caribbean

Walking through the countryside or the streets of a city or town is an excellent way to get a feel of the place that one travels to, be it an island in the Caribbean or a picturesque town in Europe. Nature trails that go over mountains and along scenic landscapes abound in the Caribbean. Most people who travel to this region go straight to the beaches but eco-tourists and hikers know that there is more to the Caribbean than beaches, water sports, and sun worshipping..

In St. Kitts and Nevis, a rainforest tour can take you through a canopy of lush green tropical trees including bamboo where you can see a variety of monkeys and colorful tropical birds. Hikes on El Yunque’s rainforest trail in Puerto Rico along well maintained paths can give an insight into the amazing ecosystems that thrive in the rainforest and the need to protect them.

When you travel to the Cayman Islands, do not forget to walk along the Woodland Walking Trail in the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. The giant ferns, orchids, bromeliads, and cactus that grow along the trail create a unique environment where visitors can experience absolute serenity.

In Jamaica, a walk to Dunn’s River Falls can be a fun experience, particularly when a human chain is formed by holding hands with the others in the group as everyone follows the guide, trying not to trip. Visitors to Jamaica, whether they travel to Montego Bay or Ocho Rios, make it a point to go to Dunn’s River Falls.

Unique among the walking trails in the Caribbean is the scenic Bermuda Railway Trail which runs along the unused railway track offering panoramic views of the landscape.

These are but a small sample of the pleasures that walkers and hikers can find in the Caribbean. No matter which island one visits, walking is the best way to get a taste of life on the island.
