Food Selection and Weight Loss

When trying to lose weight, the food you select is particularly important. There are many dieting options today, but most times weight loss can be achieved by remembering a few simple rules.

Cutting fat is one of the most important foods you can cut for fast weight loss. Fats require more than twice the number of calories to burn off than either carbohydrates or proteins. While making low-fat selections is important for weight loss, it is equally important to cut calories overall. Many low-fat foods are highly caloric and may contain a lot of sugar.

Choosing foods that have a high glycemic index is good for weight loss. These foods include things such as whole grains and vegetables. They are metabolized slowly and rather than providing a quick burst of energy, they provide longer-lasting fuel. They do not cause spikes in blood sugar, and are not as easily stored as fat.

Surround yourself with good food choices to make weight loss less of a struggle. Having sweet, salty or fatty snacks in your home can be a recipe for diet disaster. Having wholesome snacks such as vegetables, whole grain crackers, fruit, and nuts (in moderation) will make it less likely that you will sabotage your diet when faced with temptation.

Eating food in moderation is another key to weight loss. Reducing portion sizes and avoiding too many snacks can significantly reduce your calorie count each day and lead to weight loss over time.

Finally, avoid getting too hungry because this will increase the chance of overeating at meal time. Eating a small healthful snack between meals is a way to ward off extreme hunger and make mealtime less of a feeding frenzy.
